Greetings from Tabitha House! We welcome you, and thank you for your interest.
Tabitha was a biblical woman in the New Testament (Acts 9:36 ). She lived in the land of Joppa . Tabitha was known for her good works and charity to the poor, hungry and the homeless. Just like Tabitha, under the leadership and guidance of Reverend Willie & Sister Lula Walker, Founder and President, we are still keeping the tradition of “Sharing and Caring” at this present time.
Tabitha Community Services was founded in 1975 in Reverend Walker's home. In 1977, they relocated to 5352 West Lake , into a building, which was donated to them by the Masons for 30 years at $1.00 per month. This building was used for education, food pantry, after school program, clothing drives, work site for youth GED program, and secretarial activities for mothers and their children.
The homeless visited the community center for housing, food, and clothing every day but there was no housing available at the time. Tabitha House was incorporated in 1978 and in 1979 moved to 550 North Pine Avenue . Since the beginning, we have been dedicated to serving the needs of our destitute communities. Helping others to help themselves is what we are all about.
Our year-round services consist of Emergency Shelter, Emergency Food Program, Emergency Clothing, Counseling, Referrals, Assistance to Battered Women, Certified Training & Work Programs, Programs for Senior Citizens, future In-house Day Care, Emergency shelter, food and clothing for fire victims and displaced persons.
Tabitha is doing her best to continually service the increasing human needs of victimized women, children and families city-wide in Chicago and the Suburbs regardless of race, sex or religion.
In 1990, a major part of our vision was developed. To help generate income for the Tabitha House we opened the doors to a resale store, which also helps the community survive through hard times by offering low-priced items. The resale store also serves as an employment & training site for homeless women, the community and organizations in need of clothing and furniture. |
